“We had been making favourable comments from people who went to see the film… but the other films that we were competing against was also huge films with filmmakers who had been nominated for an Oscar before.”. “We thought that we had a chance, but certainly we think that we were favorites.”

“” And now my generation, he y a number of filmmakers… try to relive that, but it is rare, “she said in a transcript provided by the Academy.”
“And I hope that this will be a boost for a more thriving film industry in Pakistan.”
Obaid-Chinoy said filled bash of Hollywood star was provided a surprising with fame brush after it claimed the statue of gold. She said that the first two people, that it stands behind the scenes A-Lister Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
“And because Angelina has a link to Pakistan, because it was there, it was really nice to converse with him about it and give him a copy of our film,” said Obaid-Chinoy.
Oscar a problem for the Iran
Feb 28th
Following his first victory Sunday night for best foreign film, the Iran was a political riddle:
On the one hand, the country wants to boast about his film, “Separation,” beaten how the Israeli film “reference”.
(You can get out of its nuclear program, but we have an Oscar, it is!)
On the other hand, boast on the Oscar give validity to the importance of Western influences.
Director Asghar Farhadi, in his speech of acceptance Sunday, said he hoped the Oscar would raise the Iran scalable artistic achievements and rich culture, which have been “hidden under the heavy dust of politics.”
And where was which was strikingly apparent? Israel.
The Iranian film has attracted tens of thousands of moviegoers Israeli since its opening. Some have come to see the competition Oscar for “Reference”, but some came just to see the inside of the Iran.
And what you know? Once you’ve passed the radical Government, Iranians are people, too.
Moshe Amirav, a Professor of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said he “did not stop thinking the bomb all the time” he looked “separation.”
“I have it said, what a contrast that we see the Iranian film with this admiration, and when we leave we think in the way they want to kill us,”Amirav said.”
(Note: the Academy Awards were not broadcast on Iranian television.)
** During this time, in Pakistan, the Government honoured Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, filmmaker first country to win an Oscar. The Iran welcomed the victory of the countryman Oscar triumph over Israel
Feb 28th
Pleasure: The Iranian Director Asghar Farhadi, collects his Best Foreign Film Award for “separation”. The success was hailed as a victory on Israel by the Iranian regime
He claimed later that the Oscar means “American judgment was bowed to Iranian culture.
The film explores the disorders in Iranian society through the story of a marriage collapsing.
It tells the story of a couple heading divorce and dealing with internal unrest, including a young child and an aging parent.
Iranian conservatives have upset the themes of internal unrest, gender inequality and the desire of many Iranians to leave the country.
In his acceptance speech Mr. Farhadi that he hoped that the Oscar could raise sizable artistic achievements said and rich culture that has been “hidden under the heavy dust of politics” of the Iran.
Surprisingly, the film was a huge success in Israel, where tens of thousands of people have flocked to see since it opened this month.
Critical film Israeli Yair Raveh said: “it is very well acted, exceptionally well written and very moving”.
“Ultimately, you don’t think of nuclear bombs or dictators threatening world peace.” You see cars driving and go to the movies and they look exactly like us. »
Tensions between Israel and the Iran have strengthened in recent months a series of murders.
Israel is also deeply concerned by the recent progress of the nuclear program of the Iran and would contemplate strikes against the Bushehr nuclear plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency warned the Iran are close to produce half the amount of enriched uranium to arm a nuclear warhead.
Moshe Amirav, Professor of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said he “not stop thinking about the bomb all the time” he looked “separation.”
He said: “I have said, what a contrast that we the see Iranian film with this admiration, and when we leave us think about how they want to kill us.”
Often, the Iranian Government highlights the sporting achievements and technological jumps as a source of national pride but is normally little concerned Awards international, cultural, and entertainment.
The Academy Awards were not broadcast live on Iranian television, but many Iranians watched by satellite dishes, which are illegal but widely used.
Excerpts from the acceptance speech for Farhadi were later broadcast on State television.
His themes are not overtly political, ultra-conservateurs, denigrated the film as an indirect slap at the country.
“Eminent sociologist hard Ebrahim Fayyaz called a realistic film noir” which described the country as an old man, a symbol of the tradition and the past which is afflicted with a disease crippling in mind.
He said that the film suggests to emigrate to the West as a solution. “Western price movies that are in the sense of their policies,” he told the news agency Nasim.
The Iranian authorities have a longstanding relationship uncomfortable with the directors of the country. Management provides the flexibility to explore many social issues but draws a line marked on the works to much protest connotation.
In January, the regime ordered the closure of the House of cinema, a group of independent film which had operated for 20 years and counted top filmmakers of the Iran, including Farhadi, among its members.
Officials said it was not appropriate permits, but artists and others argue that it was a political decision because the group often took liberal stands contrary to the cultural policy of the Government. Last month, Farhadi has proposed that the Iranian authorities allow a vote among the artists on his fate.
Iranian cinema has long been one of the main cultural exports of the nation, but also the target of law enforcement policy.
Last year, Director Jafar Panahi, who won the award in Cannes, Venice and other major film festivals, was sentenced to a six-year house arrest and a ban on 20 years of film after being guilty of “making propaganda” against the decision of the system Iran.
In 2007, the Cannes jury prize is the animated film “Persepolis” based on the graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi to grow during the Islamic revolution of 1979. She now lives in exile in Paris, fearing possible arrest if she returns in Iran.

Islamabad: The documentary won first Oscar of Pakistan is a matter of national pride, but its “content is a matter of national shame”, said.

Plummer finally has Oscar glory Prize crowns 6-decade career
HOLLYWOOD, 27 Feb (AFP): more than 40 years after his first role in “The Sound of Music”, Christopher Plummer Sunday crowned a six-ten years of career with an Oscar long.
The Canadian veteran – one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood – won finally the recognition of voters of the Academy for its representation of a sick widow kissing his homosexuality in “Beginners”.
82, He became the oldest actor to win an Oscar, two years older than Jessica Tandy was when she won best actress honors for “Driving Miss Daisy.”
Speaking to his coveted Golden statuette, he jokes: “”you are only two years older than me, darling – where have you been all my life?”adding that he had been repeating his Oscar acceptance speech since he was born.”
He received a standing ovation of the public in the 84th Academy Awards.
Reward
The Oscar for best actor was a reward of fitting for one of the most admired actors and the most prolific working today in Hollywood.
At an age where many actors are considering retirement, Plummer showed no sign of scaling back of commitments, in not less than 11 films from 2009.
Last month, he brought a Screen Actors Guild award and a Golden Globe for “Beginners”, in which he plays with Ewan McGregor and was directed by Mike Mills, who based the story on his own father.
“I just can’t tell you what pleasure I had as a member of the profession of second oldest in the world,” Plummer said that he accepted SAG best second actor trophy.
“I mean the actors are gregarious and wacky, they are not.” And I love them dearly, but when they you the honour is like be illuminated by the Holy Grail. Thank you, thank you, thank you. »
And his Oscar-winning turn in “Beginners”, Plummer has recently expressed a part in the animated hit “Up” and roles in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, of Terry Gilliam another film of animation “9″ and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.
“I want to continue working,” Plummer said in a recent interview. “And that to me at my age advanced the prospect of work is three times more interesting, because it keeps you (remember) that you are old.”
In the first years of his career in Hollywood, jokes Plummer, he used to choose the films depending on where they were filmed.
“I used to retrieve due to the location, therefore if it is South of the France, I don’t care how the script is but the Cote d’Azur – Eh well, all right, for six weeks,”Plummer said.”"
“But it was in the 1960s, when all these kind of films were made rather like that.”. Everyone had four hours meals and back to all, have not yet read the script. And it showed.
The young Plummer said be dynamic on stage in London and Broadway – winning praise as the first Shakespearean actor out of North America in the 20th century–but it could be argued that his charisma is not transfer through the lens on celluloid early in his film career.
Good that he will probably always remembered as Captain Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” – a film he despised publicly to softening his position in a 2008 autobiography – he has improved with age.
One of his most successful roles came in the 1999 “The Insider” film, where he plays the journalist CBS veteran Mike Wallace in exciting thriller of Michael Mann on a denunciation of the tobacco giants.
In recent years Plummer also played in 2006 heist film Spike Lee “Inside Man, oil and drama espionage”Syriana”, the romantic comedy”must Love Dogs,”and”A Beautiful Mind.”"
It was one of his most recent roles as Russian author of Leo Tolstoy in “The Last Station” (2009) which led recognition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where he was named as best actor in a second role.
In “Beginners”, Plummer: Hal fields said his son (played by McGregor) that he has terminal cancer and a young male lover.

Five Oscars “Artist” prompt happy France reaction
Feb 27th
PARIS Declaration – It is well past midnight in Paris of the Oscar broadcast concluded. If France awakened Monday with the euphoria of the remarkable success of “The artist,” the French production that was filmed in Los Angeles.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy called victory 5-Oscar for the film “bear witness to the vitality of our cinema”, in a statement which has been reflected by the Socialist opposition candidate Francois Hollande, who said the Oscar recognition “shows the vitality of our film, its major role in the influence of the France.”
News in newstands to the Montparnasse train station and beyond loudly hailed success of the silent film as a “revival of the French cinema”.
But a nagging question kept popping up on this side of the Atlantic: how the French is the American film, directed and produced by the French, but filmed in Hollywood, in English and to prohibit, even erroneous or collected (depending on how you see it), as an American film directed by viewers to United States, not to mention the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of God himself?
Even the Director Michel Hazanavicius repeatedly said the film “is clearly more French American inspiration.”
Many sense of France that the film was honoured in Los Angeles, because it flatters us nostalgia for a golden age in film and was promoted by the producer Harvey Weinstein, as an American creation (mainly). Not because it reflects the French talent in this regard particularly.
“How a black and white silent French… end film place with five Oscars?” request Olivier Bonnard for Le Nouvel Observateur. The answer: “because the Americans do not know is a French film,”with “a different magic trick signed by Weinstein.” “.”
“” The artist”is a vibrant love for American cinema,” said Bonnard. “Academy surely loved looking in the mirror as the film took him.”
Reports of the French in recent weeks, often underlined as Jean Dujardin, star of the Oscar film kept his word to a minimum while promoting the film in the United States, preferring to stick to a few English comments strongly accented, more a dance step dancing, silence or two, to minimize the importance of the Frenchness of the film. (“Saturday Night Live,” on the other hand, is a tribute to French shots in a skit of dance with Dujardin.)
And if recently published statistics show 2011 was one of the most successful in terms of box-office revenue, film production and exports, the France of the auto-satisfaites on that new reports were met as soon as questions about knowledge if French film deserves praise really has been here.
“” Success, Oscars… but is French movie really do this well? “requested the resumption of the weekly French culture the Inrockuptibles.” With examples such as “The artist”, which is inconsistent with notions of typical films “author” or the new wave of French style, editor of the magazine, Jean-Marc Lalanne, concluded: “it seems that French cinema, for those who are, as a counter-model.” Person only really wants to be a part of it. »
Yet scratch the head, Monday-morning celebrations (in the Newsroom at least) appeared in growing, to speak of “cracking” the American film industry.
“On the scene of Hollywood and Highland Center… French emphasis was heard in all its splendour,” wrote the daily French the world.
And he seemed to have no end to images of smiling winner Dujardin and minor variations on the catchy sentence on television as well as in print: “How a Frenchy captivated Hollywood.”

Jeff Simon: Oscar expected to bring back yesteryear kitsch
Feb 27th
You need Sacha Baron Cohen in the E! network. Billy Crystal was not quite enough this year as the official gagmaker of Oscar on ABC. In fact, in his ninth time as Oscar host, it seems to have become reality in the 21st century, Bob Hope.
Wretch, tasteless japery and shameless self-promotion Cohen for his next film “The dictator” may be exactly what 84th annual Academy Awards desperately to keep the event from drowning narrowly Sunday, good taste and banality.
Cohen arrived in character on the red carpet for many of us are, and come to fear what he claimed was an urn containing the ashes of Kim Jong-Il, her “tennis partner and friend.” It was, said “The dictator”, citing Kim, “my dream to come to the Oscars and be sprinkled on the red carpet and Halle Berry breast.”
“That you wear?” asked Ryan Seacrest.
“I wear John Galliano,” Cohen/dictator replied, “but the socks are Kmart.” As Saddam Hussein once said to me, the socks are low. Don’t waste money. »
When Cohen spilled some of his ashes on Seacrest tux, it was, he said, perfect in case someone asked Seacrest that he was wearing. “Now when people ask, you say Kim Jong-Il.”
For everything, I did not find Cohen in almost as horrible taste as Crystal song medley final where he spoofed “Help him” to the melody of “Birth of the Blues”. (Who wrote that?) Martin old composer Irving Cohen – no brief report – the “Saturday Night Live” which is used to say “(give me a C, give a bouncy c?).
Anyone who naturally Sacha Baron Cohen desperately juvenile and piggish to no small degree must remember him in a lean “bikini,”being lowered upside down in the lap of Eminem on the MTV movie awards, giving the Detroit rapper surly notice up-close-up-and personal more spicy award show history?”" (Eminem pretended to storm off the coast but admitted later that he was in the gag.) Don’t tell me that the kid is no trouper.)
Which, for this topic, can forget about Cohen, in the character of Borat, arriving for the projection of Toronto Film Festival for the film in a cart drawn by women claiming to be peasants Khazistani?
Now, it may be said: I know not you, but I dreaded Oscars this year, I have a few others.
The show is in danger. A new crisis. As the number of awards shows has increased exponentially and the Oscars themselves have become much more intelligent, more predictable and less kitsch over the years, the nominated films are are more small and more small (and often better and better) to the best winner of photo of this year, “The artist”, was – despite its excellence and comforting film love – so tiny that you could fit in the brain of most current presidential hopes and still have enough room for two left seeds of Sesame and the heart of Dick Cheney (a shout-out for the ghost of Fred Allen to be able to fly a gag of classic old radio).
Frankly, I could not myself to predict “The artist” to win the best film music because of his thievery of partition of Bernard Herrman for “Vertigo” from Hitchcock.
Therefore what we are watching – profile Gill – is a massive, proud, over-hyped community self-celebration honoring films that could not possibly larger audiences Please nest.
In other words, it was virtually guaranteed to be a walloping disappointment. Which it was.
When “The artist” both Woody Allen, travel from Paris and the joke to modernism models Guide “Midnight in Paris” began important weigh to there weeks Oscars this year, it was clear that the bad taste per gallon may be the only thing to spend us the evening alive and happy.
Or help the cause of keeping it real when forever the sophomoric Bret Ratner Director ashcanned: Oscar-meister year last to tell the world that “repetition is for the Poofs”, almost forcing Eddie Murphy to leave school with him.
Yes, it was great that pataugé Crystal instead of Murphy.
But that did not issue intrinsically any more large. More spicy.
Me? I would have pleaded with Murphy to give the sure thing best Oscar actor support for Christopher Plummer for playing a gay man finally out of the closet at the age of 75 in “Beginners”.
What Sylvester Stallone and Miley Cyrus giving the award for original screenplay?
Needed us the past resolute kitsch. Not the flawed kitsch of the new century.
Funny, frankly that what Crystal said the night was the sound editor “Hugo”, who thanked everyone “that has never been born…” And if you do not, you know who you are.
It is not that the Crystal was a total loss, of course, in the early evening. That is not possible. He found a good old subject line the nominees for actor Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow.
“We are going to slam the 72 – 84 years population…”. The next year, they will appeal Flomax theatre. »
(In editing of film early Crystal, Justin Bieber looked a taxi in a parody of Woody Allen “midnight in Paris” and said: “I am here for you the 18-24 demographic”.)
And, of course, Chris Rock was funny with “Rango” with the Oscar for the best animated Film. And Meryl Streep moved to accept what it predicts naturally would be his last Oscar for his “last time here.”
But the problem with the night to do that. As Kim Jong – He could have said “The dictator” Cohen, for all the real entertainment value involved, they might as well start thinking to the show at the Kmart, with socks of the dictator.
“Don’t lose money.”
Or, heaven help us, our time is.
And how Jeff with his choice of Oscar? 13 Predictions, eight came to winning, including best film, Director, actor and actress, script, art direction, animation film and foreign language film.
